Oregon Territory
October 14, 2005 — Big Cats
One of the most successful captive cheetah-breeding programs in North America is right here in Oregon. Since 1974, thirty-seven litters of cheetah cubs have been born at the Wildlife Safari near Winston
Dr. Laurie Marker, a cheetah conservation expert, spent 16 years (1974-1988) at the wildlife park establishing the breeding program.
Today on Oregon Territory, we explore the challenges of breeding and raising big cats in captivity, and take a look at how Oregon became home to one of the most successful captive cheetah-breeding programs in the nation.
Host: Christy George
Guest: Dr. Laurie Marker, executive director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund; and a live education cheetah from Leopards, Etc.
