January 6, 2006 — Abortion and Healthcare Access

part one part two

With U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Judge Samuel Alito beginning next week, we're taking a look at how Supreme Court decisions play out in Oregon in terms of two specific issues: abortion access and rural health care access.

In past writings, Judge Alito has opposed abortion rights. Since he would be replacing Justice Sandra Day O'Connor-- who was often a swing vote in protecting abortion rights-- we're exploring how his confirmation might play out locally in terms of abortion access.

We're also exploring the concept of healthcare access in rural areas of the state, where often it's not just abortions that aren't available, but treatment for many other medical conditions as well.

Host: Christy George

Guests: Carol Bernick, attorney with Davis, Wright, Tremain in Portland; and Sen. Ben Westlund, (R-Bend)
