In 2003, Senator Gordon Smith’s son Garrett committed suicide. Sen. Smith and his wife Sharon were overcome with grief, guilt, and questions about Garrett’s death.

In an effort to deal with this tragedy, Sen. Smith wrote a book, “Remembering Garrett, One Family’s Battle with a Child’s Depression”. In the book, Smith candidly retraces his son’s life, and chronicles the crippling sadness he and his wife faced after the suicide.

Gordon and Sharon Smith talk to us this week about the book, sharing their raw emotions and insight into what helped them continue on and become advocates for better mental health programs and suicide prevention.

Host: Christy George

Guests: Gordon & Sharon Smith
