A year ago this weekend, Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on the Gulf Coast. Today. the city remains a shell of its former self - with vast stretches of empty neighborhoods, uninhabited homes and abandoned businesses.

The first step in rebuilding this critical American city is reconstructing a levee system that will truly guard greater New Orleans. The second step is imagining a new New Orleans that protects the city's character and people.

We'll hear from a Pulitzer Prize-winning New Orleans Times Picayune reporter and author, and an acclaimed Oregonian architect who's been working on a new Louisiana master plan since the storm hit.

Host: Christy George

Guests: Mark Schleifstein,New Orleans Times-Picayune reporter and co-author, with John McQuaid, of "Path of Destruction: the Devastation of New Orleans and the Coming Age of Superstorms."
