December 22, 2006 — Christmas Bird Count
The Christmas bird count began over a hundred years ago as a Christmas bird hunt. The "winner" was the person who bagged the most birds.
An ornithologist turned it into a bird census in 1900, and ever since then, bird watchers throughout North America have chipped in to help keep tabs on local bird populations.
This week, we're heading out on bird watching trip and talking with some of the folks who have helped count birds throughout Oregon for years.
Host: Christy George
Feature: Wink Gross, compiler for Portland Bird Count, birding tour of Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge produced by Pete Springer
Guests: Peg Boulay, Eugene bird count volunteer and sensitive species coordinator, Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife; and Marti St. Louis, wildlife area manager, Summer Lake Wildlife Area, Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife.
