After being hunted almost to extinction in the lower 48 states, the gray wolf was listed by the federal government as the first species to be protected under the Endangered Species Act in 1973.

In the years since, wolf populations have recovered in some states.

This week, the federal government announced the start of a long process to delist the gray wolf in the Upper Great Lakes, Montana, and Idaho-a decision that also affects Oregon.

Though there are no confirmed wolves in Oregon at present, wildlife official suspect there may be wolves here that have crossed from Idaho, as at least three wolves have done in the recent past. One of those wolves was relocated back to Idaho, the other two were found dead.

Today, we're talking wolves-state and federal plans to manage them-and what this means to Oregon.

Host: Christy George

Guest: Russ Morgan, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wolf coordinator
