March 30, 2007 — Street Families

part one part two

You can find homeless youth living on the streets of any large city in the world-including Portland.

Some of these youths form groups they call "families"-groups that have hierarchies and codes of behavior that must be followed by all the members of the street family. The families have street parents and call each other "brother" and "sister".

And if a family member violates a rule, they are punished-or killed. This is what happened to Jessica Williams in 2003. Members of the Thantos Family in Portland killed her, they say, because she had violated their rules.

Through the story of the Thantos Family and the murder of Jessica Williams, this week we're taking a look inside street families.

Host: Colin Fogarty

Guest: Rene Denfeld, author of All God's Children and The New Victorians.
