April 27, 2007 — Ben Linder & Nicaragua
Twenty years ago, Portlander Ben Linder was in Nicaragua working as a civil engineer on a hydroelectric project. He was ambushed and killed by U.S. backed contras. His death made headlines throughout the U.S. and marked a turning point in the U.S. involvement in the war in Nicaragua.
This week we're examining why Linder's death still resonates twenty years later, what Nicaragua is like these days, and what U.S. foreign policy is towards Nicaragua.
Host: April Baer
Guest: Elisabeth Linder, Ben's mother; David Smith, dentist and volunteer with Medical Teams International who spent time providing dental care in Nicaragua last year; and Richard Peck, professor of international affairs and specialist in Latin American issues at Lewis and Clark College.
