Last month, the Oregon legislature and governor approved domestic partnerships for same-sex couples. This gives same-sex couples some of the benefits of marriage.

Opponents of domestic partnerships for same-sex couples plan to collect signatures to put the issue on the ballot.

Today, we're looking at the history of marriage and some of the changes it has gone through over time. We're also exploring some of the legal differences between marriage and domestic partnerships.

Host: Allison Frost

Guest: Albert Menashe, head of the Oregon State Bar & managing partner of Gervurtz Menashe family law firm; and Stephanie Coontz, professor of history and family studies at Evergreen College in Olympia & author of several books on marriage, including 'Marriage, a History: How Love Conquered Marriage'.
