Today's topics -- Could the pear be Oregon's Peach? Sewage in the Willamette, and Baker Valley ranchers protest wolf rules.
Today's hits from the big national dailies
New York Times
Bankruptcy Bill Is Arena for Abortion Fight
(This has lots of twists and turns--but stay with me! The Senate is debating a bankruptcy bill, right? There's a proposed amendment that would prevent anti-abortion protestors from declaring bankruptcy to hide their assets. Like when they're being sued for illegal protest methods. Says here Gordon Smith has supported this in the past, but may flip on today's crucial vote, because he thinks it would kill the bill.)
Colicky Baby? Read This Before Calling an Exorcist
(No local tie but I am curious for our working dads' critique on this. Researchers and doctors are offering plentiful--if sometimes contradictor-- advice on calming screaming babies.)
Op _ED: I Shopped Them All
(Kind of nice, in light of the Meier & Frank situation. Anybody know when the name change comes?)
Washington Post
(These are mostly for Beth. Thanks for the article--forgot to bring it back but will tomorrow.)
Cronkite takes dig at Rather
I for One AM Genuinely Sorry to see Big Dan Go
...and from our regional papers.
Immigration debate stirs emotions
(This article refers to a Willamette U event, but there's an accompanying piece with some feedback fro that story a few days back about voluntary border guards. Hot stuff.)
Pear is pitched as Oregon symbol
(Your choice for state fruit? [insert joke of your choice here])
Raw sewage spills into the Willamette
LaGrande Observer
DEFENDANTS CLAIM OSP CONDUCTED ILLEGAL SEARCHES
(This is an update on the Hemstreet poaching case.)
Baker City Herald
Ranchers protest wolf rules
(Seven ranchers in the Baker Valley say they're closing their lands to hunting in protest of the state'snew wolf rules.)
Argus Observer (Ontario)
Area US Senators support beef ban
OSU revisits consensual relationship policies
PERS hike hits agency budgets
(Hood River schools, the county, the city, all fumbling to deal with the hike. Nice sidebar for today's decision?)
