This weekend, Clackamas County marks the 35th anniversary of a concert the likes of which Oregon hasn't seen before or since.

In the summer of 1970, Oregon's legendary governor Tom McCall received word that tens of thousands of young people were on the move for a massive demonstration against the Vietnam War. Their target: an American Legion convention in Portland, featuring a keynote address by President Richard Nixon.
McCall had to make a decision, and fast.

His solution was to hold a rock concert.

April Baer spoke with Oregon writer Matt Love about his book documenting Vortex One and about why Governor McCall was willing to listen to the young protestors who came up with the idea.
