Latest wildfire updates here.

Today's hits from the big national dailies:

New York Times
Vanished, Under Force of Time and an Inconstant Earth
Last night, I came dangerously close to getting into a barfight with some schlep from Fort Lauderdale who suggested that New Orleans should not be rebuilt. I feel almost physically ill to think of that lovely, wild city drowning in a toxic sludge. That said, this article on other famous societies swallowed by nature made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Note the quote from U of O archaeologist William Ayres. Food for thought.

Washington Post
2005 Fire Season Marked by Big Range Fires
Generally speaking, it's been a pretty mild fire season, but one interagency guy notes: "In the area that runs from Northern California through central and eastern Oregon on into central Idaho, we are seeing energy release components that are setting records."

Los Angeles Times
O'Connor's Staying on Court May Carry Little Weight
A reminder of the stakes in the post-Rehnquist/post-O'Connor era....

Seattle Times
200 evacuees arrive Thursday at McChord base
"About 200 evacuees from hurricane-hit Louisiana are expected to arrive at McChord Air Force Base near Tacoma on Thursday, Gov. Christine Gregoire announced yesterday. The evacuees are the first of up to 2,000 that Washington state will be welcoming."

Research project just rotting away in forest
Would it surprise you to know that dead trees are like condos for thousands of tiny critters? OSU researcher studying rotting trees in the Willamette National Forest.... this actually sounds like fun.

Issaquah climbs aboard growing streetcar line

...and from the northwest's regional papers.

Salem Statesman Journal
Oregon Guardsmen lend support, see New Orleans destruction
Yow. Welcome to New Orleans, soldiers. Or what's left of it. Kristian F.V will have more on this for today's Oregon Considered. That's 4:30 PM on your radio.
