Ashland Cracks Down On Short-Term Vacation Rentals

OPB | Oct. 3, 2013 12:15 p.m. | Updated: Oct. 4, 2013 10:30 a.m.

Some Ashland residents who rent out rooms or homes to tourists are into trouble with the city for not obeying zoning and permit requirements. The city says that property owners in residential areas not zoned for business uses are barred from renting out their property, and has sent cease-and-desist letters to some homeowners with postings on short term rental sites like airbnb or VRBO. The city passed new regulations last month regarding the licensing, taxation, and land-use permits for short-term rental units.

The Ashland Lodging Association has also taken issue with the short-term rental market, going so far as to issue a travel advisory on its website, warning tourists to look out for illegal rentals.

Have you ever used Airbnb or another similar site as either a guest or a host? What was your experience? Do you think they should be permitted in town like Ashland?
