Curry County Sheriff John Bishop is stepping down, citing a rise in stress brought on by the continuing lack of resources available to his department. His resignation will take effect in late September. When he took the job in 2008, Bishop had 16 deputies - he now has just six left, tasked with patrolling an area 100 miles long. Last fall, Curry County residents were among those who rejected public safety levies aimed at funding sheriff’s departments and jails. Earlier this year, they held a summit to try to grapple with the problem.
We’ll dig into Bishop’s resignation and its implications for Curry County with Jane Stebbins, a reporter at the Curry Coastal Pilot.
