January marks the first month that Oregonians are being insured through Cover Oregon — the state’s troubled health insurance exchange. Applicants had until Monday at 5 p.m. to choose their plan, which would be retroactive to the first of the month.
Cover Oregon says 20,000 people signed up for private insurance and 35,000 joined the Oregon Health Plan through the exchange, but some are in the dark about whether their coverage has begun. Officials estimate about half of the people who applied still have not completed their applications.
