Dean Hall says it was not his lifelong dream to swim the Willamette river. He was a therapist — healthy and happily married, living in Kansas. He’s a native Oregonian but he’d moved to the midwest for his wife.
Five years ago, his life changed. He lost his wife of 30 years to a brain tumor and shortly thereafter had a recurrence of the leukemia he’d successfully fought off in the past. He says these things made him radically reassess his priorities and trajectory.
We’ll talk to Dean Hall alongside the Willamette, and find out how the river came to beckon him and how swimming the length of it has affected him, both physically and mentally.
