Eight Children Saved from Drowning at Hagg Lake

OPB | Sept. 17, 2012 12:50 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 12:02 a.m.

It’s not often you hear about drowning stories that didn’t happen. Usually if tragedy is avoided, it doesn’t make the news. But the scope of this rescue caught the region’s attention over the weekend. A family having a reunion at Washington county’s Hagg Lake noticed a drowning boy. As the family mobilized to help, they noticed another unconscious child, then another, then another. Eight children in all, ages three to 13 were pulled from the water and revived. Evan Gibson says he and his siblings were just doing what people should do in times of crisis. However, he admits, there were many others in the area that failed to act.

Do you have experience rescuing or being rescued? Have you ever felt conflicted about getting involved in a situation where you thought someone needed help?
