On Friday, Reed College political science professor Paul Gronke gave us a preview of the election in Ukraine, where served as an observer. Billionaire businessman Petro Poroshenko won a decisive victory in the election Sunday. Gronke was dispatched to a small city in southern Ukraine, where he monitored a polling station for any irregularities. He says he didn’t witness any problems.
Gronke spoke to exit pollsters and people on the street to hear their thoughts on the results and how voting went. The region he was watching took eight hours to count 1200 ballots. Gronke says the process was very transparent compared to American elections, and he thinks the presence of election monitors encouraged people to follow procedural rules very carefully.
