Examining Assisted Living in Oregon

OPB | Aug. 5, 2013 12:06 p.m. | Updated: Sept. 11, 2013 1:16 a.m.

Stories of neglect and lack of staff training and support are the basis of Frontline and ProPublica‘s documentary, “Life and Death in Assisted Living.” The tragedies occurred at facilities nationwide, and Mary Jaeger, the state ombudsman for long-term care, considers Oregon’s assisted living facilities to be better regulated. But she says Oregon’s facilities still get complaints — mostly related to understaffing, food quality, and improper dispersal of medication.

We’ll take a look at how Oregon’s assisted living facilities rate and the resources available to seniors and their families.

Have you had a loved one move into an assisted living facility? What was their experience like?

GUESTS:

  • A.C Thompson: Reporter for ProPublica
  • Mary Jaeger: State of Oregon Long-Term Care Ombudsman
  • Jason Hess: CEO of Elite Care Assisted Living Facilities
