Lawmakers Take On Mental Health Issues

Oregon State Capitol

Oregon State Capitol

Dave Blanchard/OPB

This is a fascinating session when it comes to mental health issues, according to Chris Bouneff, executive director of the Oregon chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). We’ll talk with Bouneff about three bills working their way through the Oregon Legislature:

  • HB 2023 would create a standard policy for discharging patients who have been hospitalized for mental health treatment.
  • HB 2420 would change the way the state handles criminal defendants who are deemed unfit to participate in their own defense.
  • HB 3347 would add clarifying language to the state law regarding civil commitments.

Rep. Val Hoyle (D-Eugene/Junction City) will also join us to talk about HB 3347.
