Local Veterans Experience Health Care Delays

OPB | June 2, 2014 12:35 p.m. | Updated: June 2, 2014 2:08 p.m.

Last week, Eric Shinseki stepped down as secretary of veteran affairs (VA) following public outrage about severe delays  for people using the VA health care system.

The VA medical center in Phoenix failed to put 1,700 veterans on a wait list for appointments, which may have contributed to 17 deaths. Allegations of delayed care at VA medical centers nationwide have some calling for a serious reform of the system.

The Portland VA Medical Center is no exception to the flawed system. The Oregonian reported that the Portland VA ranked as the third worst facility in primary care wait times. In the wake of the national scandal, we’ll find out what some Oregon veterans think of their health care.
