"Lowriders In Space" Is A Unique Graphic Novel For Kids

Illustrator Raul the Third brings characters to life on the page with his ballpoint pen drawings.

Author Cathy Camper teamed up with illustrator Raul the Third to create “Lowriders in Space,” a new graphic novel for kids. The book follows the interstellar adventures of auto mechanic Lupe Impala and her sidekicks, El Chavo Flapjack Octopus and a mosquito named Elirio Malaria. The three friends are on a quest to win a competition for the “most mechanically inventive, exquisitely detailed, cosmic car.”

The text is sprinkled with Spanish words and Mexican-American slang, and the book includes a glossary in the back. Camper is a youth services outreach librarian for Multnomah County Library and she says, “I wrote ‘Lowriders in Space’ because as an Arab American, I was fed up with the inability of mainstream comics and books to represent the diversity of kids I see everyday, kids who like me, don’t see themselves in books.”

Cathy Camper will be reading at Powell’s City of Books on Burnside Saturday, November 8 at 4:00pm.
