If you’re a regular public radio listener, chances are you’ve heard Luke Burbank on the NPR News Quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. But that barely scratches the surface of his media gigs. He’s the force behind (and host of) the podcast Too Beautiful To Live, which boasts two million downloads a month. Until recently, he had a daily radio show on a commercial radio station in Seattle where he lives. And he does commentaries for CBS.
But Luke’s life changed recently when he accepted the position of host of the Portland-based radio variety show Live Wire! Radio after long-time host, Courtenay Hameister stepped down. The show has changed a lot over its history, going from a small-scale, once-a-month production, to a weekly show taped at the Alberta Rose theatre and heard not just on OPB but on stations around the country (and a hospital in England!). But Luke says one thing he hopes never changes is the high energy and involvement of the live audience that keeps coming back to see the mix of local and national guests, live music and original sketch comedy.
As the show begins its 10th season, we’ll talk to Luke and Courtenay about Live Wire’s niche and what they hope the show achieves in the future.
