Well, not my heart — and at least not all the time. That’s the title of a new movie by filmmaker David Meiklejohn, and the heart in question belongs to Davy Rothbart. You might have heard Davy over the years on various episodes of This American Life. He’s the creator of Found Magazine, which collects “love letters, birthday cards, kids’ homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles - anything that gives a glimpse into someone else’s life.”
My Heart Is An Idiot is a glimpse, and more, into Rothbart’s own life. It follows him over the course of a few years as he struggles with one relationship and yearns for another. Along the way he seeks out advice from Ira Glass, Zooey Deschanel, and Newt Gingrich. He pukes in the gutter. And he cries many, many times.
My Heart will premiere in Portland on Wednesday June 15th. Are you a fan of Found Magazine, or Davy’s work on TAL? Have you, like Davy, filmed yourself at your most vulnerable moments over the years? Why?
Do you think your heart is an idiot? Is the condition curable?
