Nation's First Transgender Mayor Leaves Office

Former Silverton Mayor Stu Rasmussen

Former Silverton Mayor Stu Rasmussen

Brent Drinkut/Statesman Journal

Stu Rasmussen gained national attention in 2008 when he became the first openly transgender mayor in the country. Rasmussen has been involved in Silverton’s political scene since the 1980s. He left office in January after losing a reelection bid to former Silverton police chief Rick Lewis. Rasmussen often clashed with his fellow council members, three of whom were also voted out of office in November. He described the council as “dysfunctional.”

Under Rasmussen’s watch Silverton constructed a new senior center, created an early warning system at the Silver Creek Dam and built a local skate park.

We will talk with Rasmussen about what’s next for him. One project that he says he’s excited about is turning an old storefront in Mt. Angel into a cuckoo clock.
