President Obama has nominated REI CEO Sally Jewell to replace outgoing Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. Jewell has helped the recreation equipment retailer more than double its number of outlets in the eight years she’s served as chief executive.
Along with experience in the banking industry, Jewell also served as an engineer with the Mobil oil company. That experience may help win the support of the powerful oil-and-gas lobby. She also argued in 2008 that Republican presidential candidate John McCain had stronger environmental credentials than either of the Democratic frontrunners, Barak Obama or Hillary Clinton — which may help her win confirmation from Republicans in the Senate.
