The 2013 season was a good one for the Portland Timbers. Armed with official membership to Major League Soccer (MLS), a new coach and several new key players, the Timbers have worked their way to the top.

This success was a change from the slump the Timbers found themselves in last season. Coach Caleb Porter has been credited with boosting the team’s confidence, and new team captain  Will Johnson is also seen as a positive influence on the Timbers. According to Geoff Gibson, a Timbers fan and online MLS community moderator, one of the biggest changes is the team’s mentality.  “Last season the players were really susceptible to falling down and staying down. Johnson has completely changed that energy on the field,” he says.

On Saturday, the Timbers will head to Seattle to face off against their Northwest rivals, the Seattle Sounders.
