Recommending Criminal Justice Changes

Governor John Kitzhaber is counting on significant changes to the prison system for his proposed budget to pencil out — changes that he hopes will both save money and maintain public safety. It’s a tall order. He’s appointed a commission and charged them with coming up with those changes. We got an update last year when the commission was coming up with some initial ideas. We’ve also talked about the commission’s work at other points along the way. The legislative session is around the corner. Kitzhaber and others expect the commission’s recommendations will form the basis for proposals that lawmakers will take up.

Do you have experience in the Oregon criminal justice system? Do you have ideas for changes to that would reduce costs in the prison system and ensure public safety?
