The Anthology of American Folk Music

John Rosman / OPB

The The Anthology of American Folk Music — originally released in 1952 — was compilation spearheaded by Portland-born Harry Smith, who spent years collecting recordings originally recorded between 1928 and 1932 in Appalachia and the American South.

Portland’s Mississippi Records reissued the anthology earlier this year. We’re revisiting our conversation with Mississippi Records owner Eric Isaacson and Rani Singh, director of the Harry Smith archive.

You can hear the links between the Anthology and the artists it influenced at OPB’s Arts and Life page or on our Spotify playlist.
