Walden teamed up with his Democratic colleagues, Oregon Representatives Peter DeFazio and Kurt Schrader, to introduce legislation this year to increase logging on federal forest lands. He’s also worked with Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley to try to allow for hydropower and increased water access by modifying Prineville’s Bowman dam.
But on other issues, he differs from his Democratic counterparts, most notably in his criticism of the Affordable Care Act. And he’s also disagreed with members of his own party for his criticism of President Obama’s plan to lower cost-of-living increases for Social Security beneficiaries. That part of the president’s budget was supported by many other Republicans.
Walden was elected to head the National Republican Campaign Committee last year, which raises money for the national party, and helps fund candidate campaigns.
