Tribal Members Aim To Remove Lifetime Terms On Council

John Rosman/OPB

Several members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs want to fundamentally change the way tribal government works. Currently there are three chiefs serving life terms on the tribal council, and eight members that are elected from different districts on the reservation.

The group proposes that there should be nine at-large members on the council, elected for three-year terms. They have gathered signatures to get the proposed amendment on a ballot, and are currently waiting for them to be verified.
