University Of Oregon Surveys Students On Sexual Assault Experiences

After three University of Oregon basketball players were accused of sexual assault earlier this year and suspended, the university commissioned a task force to examine the culture of sexual assault at the university, analyze the policy around the issue, and make recommendations.

Jennifer Freyd, a U of O psychologist, was one of the chairs of the task force. She recently conducted a survey of students asking them about their experiences with “unwanted sexual behavior.” Preliminary results indicate that 35 percent of female students say they’ve had at least one sexual experience without their consent and 10 percent say they’ve been raped while attending the university.
