University of Oregon

Classes begin September 30 at the University of Oregon, where President Michael Gottfredson begins his second year as the head of the institution. He came from UC Irvine and began his term officially on August 1 — in time to testify on significant changes in how the largest state-funded universities in Oregon are governed. That change will be delayed for a few months, after an unexpected maneuver in the Oregon Senate.

Meanwhile, the university has just reached a tentative deal with its classified workers union, likely avoiding a strike of 4,300 workers just as classes get underway.

Another continuing challenge UO faces is one that all higher education institutions face to one degree or another: rising tuition and fees and and the increasing need for students to take on heavy debt to cover those costs.
