Vancouver City Council Considers Affordable Housing

Anyone who is looking for a rental unit in the Portland metropolitan area knows the search can be frustrating. The rental market in Vancouver may be even tighter: estimates put the vacancy rate in Vancouver as low as two percent. Renters who are looking for affordable or below market-rate housing face a difficult search.

On Monday night the Vancouver city council met to discuss strategies to encourage developers to build more affordable housing. The council also sought to address the concerns of tenants of several apartment buildings in town who have been served vacate notices by new owners.

We’ll talk to Scott Hewitt, social issues and neighborhood reporter for The Columbian.
