Washington lawmakers are considering changing the state constitution to amend how the ballot initiative process works. Under the new rules, ballot initiative proposals would need to state how the initiative would be paid for. According to lead sponsor State Senator Joe Fain (R-South King County), the impetus for many legislators was the passage of Initiative 1351 in November. The measure requires smaller class sizes and increased school staff, but did not include a funding plan.

We’ll discuss the proposed measure with co-sponsor State Senator Jamie Pedersen (D-Seattle) and initative activist Tim Eyman.
