What To Do With Wapato Jail

OPB | June 17, 2014 12:06 p.m. | Updated: June 17, 2014 1:40 p.m.

It's been 10 years since it was built and Multnomah County's Wapato Jail has still never been used to house prisoners.

In April we did a show from Multnomah County’s Wapato Jail to discuss why it was built — and why it now sits empty. In the ten years since it was constructed, it has never been used to house inmates.

We’re following up today with news that Multnomah County officials have said they will not pursue seven suggestions they received for possible future uses of the jail. Some of the ideas included making it into:

  • a secure community college
  • a bar or house funded from sales of taffy in Seaside
  • a hospital for the mentally ill

We’ll find out why these options were denied and what’s going to happen next.
