Have you ever wondered if the lead singer of the Decemberists likes collard greens? OK, maybe you haven’t, but you’ll want to know when you hear a wonderful grade-schooler ask him that in this interview. In November we gathered a group of 50 students together to ask questions of Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) and his wife Carson Ellis about their new kids’ book, Wildwood. Meloy wrote it. Ellis drew the enchanting pictures. It was a great hour of conversation, which we broadcast live from the Literary Arts Center in Portland. Dave asked a few questions, but the students asked most of them.

Here are a few photos from the show:

Have you read Wildwood? Did you purchase it for a child — or adult, perhaps — in your life this holiday season? What did you think of it?

SPOILER ALERT: Most of the kids in the audience had finished reading the book, so some of their questions give away parts of the plot from late in the book. If you are reading the book and don’t want to know what happens next, you might want to wait and podcast this show once you finish.

GUESTS:

  • Colin Meloy: Author of Wildwood and lead singer and songwriter of The Decemberists
  • Carson Ellis: Illustrator of Wildwood
