Don’t call them magicians. These Portland sleight-of-hand artists practice cardistry, the visually dazzling art of card flourishes.
Originally a part of magic, cardists have created their own fast-growing subculture, focusing entirely on playing-card manipulation.
Similar to skateboard culture, the goal is to master highly complex skills from the cardistry world, then develop their own, original card flourishes.
Cardistry now has thousands of practitioners around the world. They regularly meet at conferences and conventions to share their talents and make new friends.
Portland cardists Sean Oulashin, Andrew Avila, and Chase Duncan (three of the world’s best) visited the OPB studios to show us their skills and talk about what Cardistry means to them.
