Christmas Valley Dunes' Fossils

OPB | Nov. 8, 2007 12:30 p.m.

Christmas Valley is home to some of the best preserved fossils in the world. At Fossil Lake, paleontologist Dr. Jim Martin from the South Dakota School of Mines works with a team of students and volunteers to excavate the remains of a native horse, a species that died out thousands of years ago. The remarkable geology and animal remains provide a record of life in the valley over the past 600,000 years.
