Adoption Conversation

Listening to yesterday's conversation about trans-racial adoption on Talk of the Nation reminded me of some unfinished business from a TOL program about adoption from last year.

Scott Simon was our final guest on the program. (Besides hosting Weekend Edition Saturday, he chronicled his experience adopting two girls from China in his book, Baby, We Were Meant for Each Other, In Praise of Adoption.) Another guest, and much of the comment thread, expressed a sense of irrevocable pain associated with adoption.

Scott later wrote me a note responding to criticism of his book on our website and that of the group Birth Mother, First Mother. Part of the comments there referred to his interview on Think Out Loud. His note is addressed to the group founders. With his permission, I post it below to continue the conversation.

Update: Monday, May 16: Jane Edwards, one of the people Scott addresses in this letter, called this morning to say she hadn't seen this before, although my understanding is Scott tried to post it to their site. Birth Mother, First Mother is putting a response to Scott on their site. We'll post the link here when it's available.
