In March we covered a bill in the Oregon legislature that would ban the possession and trade of shark fins, a traditional ingredient in the Chinese delicacy of shark fin soup. We spoke with a professor who specializes in Chinese culture and a representative from Seafood Watch at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The Oregon Senate approved the bill unanimously on Tuesday. It has already passed the Oregon House, and it will return there for a concurrence vote before heading to Governor Kitzhaber.
If you don't remember hearing about shark fins on Think Out Loud, it's because we produced it as part of a pilot show in preparation for the transition to our current segmented format. We never aired the show, but you can listen to it here. The segment on shark fins starts two-thirds of the way into the clip.
