Boy Did I Feel Smart
I might have come across like a trivia whiz on Wednesday's conversation about historic buildings in Oregon. Mike called from LaGrande to beg for preservation of the Union Pacific train station there. He mentioned it was designed by noted architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who built other railway stations in the West and lodges in many national parks.
Mike didn't mention Timberline. But our next caller sang the praises of the iconic Mt. Hood lodge. As I said goodbye, I mentioned that Timberline was also designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood.
I hadn't even known Underwood's name just a few seconds before that. Here's what really happened: The Timberline fan had told the TOL producer who answered the phone that Underwood also designed Timberline. Our director looked it up, and put it up on a computer screen we share. Now that I've poked a bit more into it, I've read that Underwood apparently did just the preliminary designs, or served as a consulting architect at Timberline. But boy did I feel – undeservedly – smart passing that tidbit on!
