Covering Comedy
I wasn't too surprised, after Auggie Smith's "We don't get no respect" rant about what he sees as dismal local coverage of comics, to get a response from Willamette Week. Ethan Smith is in charge of WW's yearly Finder guide (and plays third base for their softball team). He wrote:
I interviewed Auggie Smith in conjunction with last year's Bridgetown Comedy Festival. Yesterday's WW has piece on the festival. And here's an article I wrote a couple of month's ago about local comic Lonnie Bruhn and the Portland comedy scene as a whole—which, by the way, I tried to interview Auggie for, but he was touring and I wound up playing phone tag with his manager.
We're trying to cover local comedy more. It deserves it. But one thing to consider: Comics, in general, are terrible promoters. I'll leave BCF organizer Andy Wood and Auggie out of that category, but I can tell you as someone who gets a lot of press releases, I never get info on local comedy open mics and showcases. Guys with guitars send me a lot of emails.
So there you have it, comics: Start spamming the weeklies!
