Enforcing Fair Housing
We've had a couple of segments on issues related to fair housing. Most recently, our guests from the City of Portland, Washington County and the Fair Housing Council of Oregon talked about creating fair housing plans. The Fair Housing Council of Oregon contracts with municipalities to conduct fair housing audits.
As we mentioned on the show, cities that get federal housing money are obligated to create fair housing plans and to show they are "furthering fair housing." Audits that indicate whether housing discrimination exists can be a kind of first step, and they can also be used as the basis for enforcing fair housing law by prosecuting discriminatory landlords. However, it now appears that no prosecutions will in fact result — at least from the Portland audits.
