Face to Face
I went to Seattle to interview writer Charles Johnson today because I just thought talking would be better in person. It was, I am sure. On the way home I got another chance to reflect on face to face communication:
On the crowded bus from the KUOW studio to Seattle's Union Station, a seat opened up next to a young woman knitting something. "What are you knitting?" I asked as I sat down, looking at the pretty yarn. She looked at me oddly. "What are you knitting?" I asked again, smiling. She reached up and revealed an ear bud blocking the possibility of conversation. Her long hair hid the wire. I felt so stupid! (I still sometimes think someone is talking to me as they walk past jabbering in their handsfree phone.) She pulled the earphone out though and said, "What?"
"I was just saying hello," I said, and asked again about the knitting. "Oh," she said, "I was wondering, why is this person talking to me?"
Oh, just because you're there. And I was wondering what you were knitting.
