Ready for the latest trial run of a few changes we're exploring at TOL? We taped another hour this morning. You can stream it here or listen on the radio tonight at 9pm.

You'll find out why Oregon and Washington are both looking to tax electric cars. Hint: owners don't pay gas taxes, which go toward road construction and repair.

You'll also hear Whitecaps fan (and sports marketing expert) Paul Swangard assess what the Timbers need to do to maintain momentum. The team has just entered its first season in Major League Soccer.

And Portland writer Lidia Yuknavitch talks about her new memoir and all the life, death, and change it encompasses. One part of our conversation I'll always remember is her description of the "white space" she occupied after a deeply sorrowful experience that drove her close to insanity.

But my favorite quote is probably this:

I want to reinsert giant philosophical questions into the brains and bodies of ordinary people.

The whole conversation had to be trimmed down for air, but as promised, you can listen to the rest of it. It's about her memoir's scandalous cover. The controversy got her mad enough to write about it!

Wow! Who is that cute chick in the blue t-shirt on your 3-24-11 home page?  What a smile!

A few years ago OPB eliminated the Oregon focused news segment and instead broke up the stories scattering them.  Now we get the much more commercial feel of ‘tune in at 6:50 for the story on XYZ’ soundbite format.  A really dumb change that was less then an improvement but it stuck, the only saving grace is the content while fragmented remains good enough, but there is currently no competition for quality news coverage!  What if there was?
TOL adjusting the format away from the one subject for one hour to the contrary, I can see being a good thing, if the producer is smart enough to determine the proper length of time for the subject.  If the producer blows it, can they then come back to the topic the next opportunity (days not weeks) and there is going to be the logistical issue.
I can see that the online community could be useful in determining the time allotment; if the topic is posted a week or so in advance the reaction to the topic could be utilized as an indicator, though I am not sure how you would filter out the right/left bickering to find the pertinent content; I guess that is why y’all make the big money.  LOL!

One other thing, if you are going to use this online feedback/Blog/BBS you are going to have to do a better job of filtering out and preventing the SPAM, they have found you, AND you need a Website admin contact addy on every page so that we can report it.

Have a terrific day!
Desolation.
