At the President's Pad
It's not too often you get to visit the president of a major university in his home — and even less often that you get to do a live broadcast from his living room! Here's the outside of the home of Richard Lariviere and his wife Jan.
Mr. Lariviere welcomed us at 7:30 a.m. and made us coffee.
He then stayed out of our way until we were ready to check his microphone and make sure everything was technically set. Here are Dave and Emily prepping in front of the gas fire in the living room. Dave wondered aloud if we could get one of those for the Portland studio.
A few minutes before the show, Mr. Lariviere sat down for a chat. He told us that the episodes of Think Out Loud he's listened to reminded him of the early days of Fresh Air. This was a good thing in that, to his ear, the sound was well, fresher and more conversational.
Ready to go.
Leave it to OPB engineers Steven Kray and Jon Edmonds (the two guys behind Emily and Dave) to make everything sound perfect, despite being more than 100 miles away from our Portland studios. Also pictured: Phil Weiler with UO Communications and TOL Senior Producer Allison Frost.
Actually having the show sound technically flawless is something we're going to think about for future remotes — it sounded so much like the studio that you might not have guessed we were in the UO President's home!
Thanks to our great intern Jessica Reedy who snapped the photos and to UO for hosting us. We hope to be back sometime!
