TOL Pick: Network
The TOL staff picks are changing a little. Rather than flood you with all of our picks at once, we're going to try posting them intermittently. We hope this gives you a chance to get to know the team behind TOL a little better. And maybe it will lead you to some cool new things to explore, watch, read, or do. I'm the newest member of TOL, and I'm up first.
So to start off the new style, I'm recommending Network. If you've never seen it before you're in for a treat. But even if you've seen it already, go see it again. The movie resonates more with each year that passes — not bad for a 35-year-old movie. The "mad as hell" sentiment feels more relevant than ever in light of the Occupy Wall Street and Tea Party protests. And the Howard Beale madman anchor seems far more plausible in a post-Glenn Beck nation. (It's interesting to note that Beck himself says he identifies with Beale. Funnily enough, Steven Colbert, on the opposite side of the spectrum, says it's his favorite movie). It's a satire, so it's supposed to be funny, but it's become so believable, it feels more like a thriller these days.
Plus, it gave me some great show ideas...Mao Zedong Hour, anyone?
