Switching Us On?

Some of the most pressing suggestions from last month's suggest-a-show thread were about sustainability and our series The Switch.

Robert Shields asked about "turning EVERYTHING into a clean energy power plant and linking them together into a distributed clean energy grid." I'm not exactly sure what that would entail, but we are looking into the idea of distributed neighborhood energy — you can see one example in Portland's Sunnyside neighborhood.

And Crystal Burgoyne wrote in with her own addition to The Switch:

What continues to come to mind is the real need to live more simply.  I think a show about the simple living movement would be very interesting and engaging. For me, 'Going Green' doesn't mean 'Buying Green,' it means not buying what I don't need. I think you would find there are a lot of people in Oregon feeling the same way.

Is the green movement — in concert with the recession — changing your consumer habits in a significant way? Do you think the changes will outlast the economic downturn?

Look here: TIENANMEN REMEMBERED - 20 YEARS - http://www.artixpdx.com/#JUN - enter for details - do you know of any other event scheduled in Oregon, to memorialize this tragedy of the Tiananmen Massacre on its 20th Anniversary?

I propose a show about this memorial event in relationship to how little the US population knows about what goes on around the world.

The Tiananmen events of 1989 and 1976 are directly related to the Cultural Revolution, perhaps the greatest social upheaval anywhere of all time, rivaled perhaps only by La Conquista de México.

Why not look at the June 3, 2009, 20 year memorial event, right here in Portland and bring in a China expert to discuss the history and significance of doing this?

Make an effort to educate Oregonians about the history of one of their biggest trading partners.
