TOL Pick: Cleopatra
My pick this week is Cleopatra.
OK, well, not the ancient queen herself, but her biographer, Stacy Schiff. I saw her speak last night at Portland Arts & Lectures, and MAN, I mean WOMAN, she is sharp. I'm used to hearing smart, articulate people as part of my job, but she was one of the most articulate and compelling speakers I've heard. I'm not a particular reader of either biography or historical non-fiction, truth be told, but this is my next book acquisition. Here she is talking to Jon Stewart about Cleopatra on the Daily Show last year.
Among other things, I learned that the Queen of Egypt was in fact, Greek. Last night Schiff said something very similar to what Jon Steward said: "Cleopatra is the most well-known woman we don't know."
